Is E471 Halal?
Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids — used as an emulsifier in cakes, bread, margarine and many processed foods.
Short answer: Doubt, unless the source is clear. E471 can be made from plant oils or from animal fats. A label that only says “E471” or “mono- and diglycerides” does not tell you which one it is.
What to look for on the label
- “Vegetable mono- and diglycerides”, “plant-based”, “soy” or “sunflower” — this checker treats that as cleared, and the result will not be Doubt for E471 alone.
- “Halal certified” or a recognised Halal logo — certification clears a doubtful source in this checker (it never overrides a clearly haram ingredient).
- Only “E471” with no source — Doubt. Do not guess. Check the manufacturer or choose a certified alternative.
Try it in the checker
Paste “Flour, sugar, mono- and diglycerides (E471), baking powder” into the home checker to see the Doubt result and its reason, then try adding “vegetable” to see how the wording changes the result.
