Is E407 Carrageenan Halal?
Carrageenan (E407) is a thickener and stabiliser extracted from red seaweed, used in dairy alternatives, desserts, processed meats and sauces.
What to look for on the label
- Carrageenan on its own — this checker does not flag E407 as haram or doubtful, so an ingredient list containing only E407 (and no other flagged ingredient) returns the all-clear Halal result in the checker. That is a statement about this checker’s rule set, not a certification of the product.
- Processing aids and the rest of the product — a product can still be Doubt or Haram for a different ingredient (for example, unspecified gelatin or pork). Always check the whole ingredient list, not one E-number.
- “Halal certified” — if the product carries recognised certification, that is stronger evidence than any single-ingredient guide.
Flagged uncertainty: E407 is not a rule in the checker’s dataset (it is not in the haram, doubtful, or halal-clear lists), so the guide above is general seaweed-origin information, not a dataset-verified rule. If a certifier or scholar you follow treats processing aids differently, follow that guidance and tell us via Contact so the guide can be corrected.
Try it in the checker
Paste a full ingredient list containing E407 into the home checker and read the whole result, not just the E407 line.
