Is E422 Glycerol Halal?
Glycerol is also written as glycerin or glycerine (E422). It is used as a sweetener, humectant and solvent in food, drinks and medicines.
Short answer: Doubt, unless the source is clear. Glycerol can be made from plant oils or from animal fats, and many labels do not state which.
What to look for on the label
- “Vegetable glycerin”, “plant glycerol” or similar — this checker treats a vegetable/plant source as cleared for E422 alone.
- “Halal certified” or a recognised Halal logo — certification clears a doubtful source in this checker.
- Only “E422”, “glycerol” or “glycerin” with no source — Doubt. Contact the manufacturer if the product matters to you.
Try it in the checker
Paste an ingredient list containing E422 into the home checker, then try adding “vegetable” to see how the result changes.
